Charles Juliet
Resident in 2003
Charles Juliet was a writer, poet and playwright who sadly passed away on July 26, 2024. His work is characterized by deep introspection and an exploration of the themes of solitude, identity and the quest for self.
Charles Juliet grew up in modest circumstances, and was placed in an orphanage at the age of three months. At the age of twelve, he entered the Lycée militaire d'Aix-en-Provence, then the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr, before abandoning his military career to devote himself to writing. His first collection of poems, Fragments, was published in 1973. He made a name for himself with Lambeaux (1995), an autobiographical and poetic account of his relationship with his biological and adoptive mothers.
Over the course of his career, Charles Juliet has received several literary distinctions, including the Grand Prix des écrivains de la Méditerranée in 1995 and the Prix Goncourt de la poésie in 2017. He was also named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1996.
Following his residency, he published the novel Au pays du long nuage blanc.
